Crisis to Clarity: Explaining Problems and Owning Mistakes While Applying to College
A Talk by Hanna Stotland (Admissions Consultant, Hanna Stotland)
About this Talk
What happens when a student has good grades, but has also struggled with mental illness, substance abuse, school discipline, or a criminal problem? Colleges can be flexible when the student owns the problem and explains the recovery fully and persuasively. The session will cover ways students can put their stories into context and write about their progress. Attendees will come away better prepared to put their best honest foot forward in college applications. Themes include thinking about the explanation essay from the reader's point of view, taking responsibility for mistakes, and providing context for bad choices without making excuses.
